Reglazing Modernism co-author Angel Ayón recently sat down with Sisto Martello of Design 2147 for Episode #109 of his “Sisto Says” podcast.

Co-authors Angel Ayón and Uta Pottgiesser offered Harvard University’s graduate students in architecture a first-hand account of the detailed global case studies presented in their full-length book, Reglazing Modernism ― Intervention Strategies for 20th Century Icons, on March 13th.

Reglazing Modernism ― Intervention Strategies for 20th Century Icons was published in the fall of 2019, and since then, has been featured in numerous book talks, lectures, presentations, and published excerpts. Co-authored by AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón, the book won the 2021 Lee Nelson Book Award from the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) for the most outstanding and influential book-length work on preservation technology in North America.

On May 31st, Reglazing Modernismco-author and Docomomo International Chair Uta Pottgiesser delivered the closing keynote at the 2024 Docomomo US Symposium at the University of Miami.

The Association for Preservation Technology (APT)’s Annual Conference, entitled “The Future of TECH: Technology, Environment, Cultural Heritage,” took place in Seattle earlier this month.

On September 20th, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, one of NYC's two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, convened a group of leaders from across the built environment, including AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón, to openly discuss potential conservation solutions for the Museum in the face of a changing climate.

The US federal government owns and operates many mid-century modern buildings that are now, decades later, seeing their share of wear-and-tear. Meanwhile, occupants and users of these buildings are requiring both improved comfort and increased energy savings. These issues were specifically addressed in “Glazing Upgrades in Modernist Buildings,” Principal Angel Ayón’s September 13th presentation to a joint audience for the General Services Administration (GSA), which will also be presented to members of the Association for Preservation Technology (APT) in 2024.

What may have been the best intervention methods or materials two decades ago may now be obsolete. That’s why the Getty Conservation Institute offers an International Course on the Conservation of Modern Heritage for mid-career architects, planners, engineers, conservators, policymakers, and advocates from around the world.

Focusing on the Zeche Zollverein case study, the two-page excerpt highlights the authors’ critical assessment of the multiple glazing interventions completed as part of the renovation efforts at the former coal mine in Essen, Germany.

Finding feasible reuse strategies for many Modern buildings that no longer perform like their current-day peers is a challenge. An even bigger one is addressing the deficiencies in their exterior envelopes, particularly those in the glazing assemblies.

To ensure these structures are viable investments for the future, lessons learned from past intervention strategies must be carefully examined, as they were in APT’s virtual seminar series in early March. As part of the series, AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón and his co-author Uta Pottgiesser presented their research from Reglazing Modernism, sharing insights on curtainwall repair and upgrades from the 20 global case studies explored in the book.

Featured in its latest newsletter, Docomomo_US recently published an excerpt of the book, one that focuses on interventions at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein. This Bauhaus-influenced mine complex (1927–1932) and coking plant (1961) in Essen, Germany, was designed and built to improve the system of coal extraction and processing.

AYON Studio is excited to working on the exterior rehabilitation of one of NYC’s most notable Art Deco co-ops. Recently featured in Curbed, this “Particularly Eccentric Upper West Side Apartment Building” has served as a multi-disciplinary arts space and home for a diverse array of people, including Roerichism fanatics and practicing architects.

Angel Ayón focused discussed glass and glazing to Historic Preservation students at Columbia University's  Preservation Technology Lab. Part of Francoise Bollack's seminar titled Old Buildings – New Energy: History and Sustainable Practices, the program included a lecture followed by a lab session.

On April 14, 2021, co-author Angel Ayón shared Restoration, Rehabilitation or Replacement strategies, as studied and presented Reglazing Modernism: Intervention Strategies for Steel Frame Glazed Enclosures, for a book talk hosted by APT Twenty Century-Modern Heritage (APT TC-MH) committee.

Dr. Pottgiesser, who co-wrote Reglazing Modernism with Angel Ayón, has been unanimously elected chair of Docomomo International. Her term, running from January 2022 to December 2025, will commence in conjunction with the relocation of Docomomo Headquarters to Delft University of Technology, where she serves as Chair and Professor of Heritage & Technology. Uta will join Wido Quist from Docomomo Netherlands, as Secretary.
